Just Shut Up, Betty Bringdown
She started complaining seconds after I pulled my cart up behind hers: she was not pleased with the service, and she apparently thought I cared. Aurora and I had just had a great time at her toddler gym, but our good mood was soon sullied by the Woman Who Loves To Complain In Public. I have a name for this exasperating menace: Betty Bringdown. And she needs to just shut up.
I know bad service can drive you crazy, but I’ve never been one to drag an innocent bystander into my personal retail hell-hole. It’s just rude! And so instead of playing with my daughter and using the time to teach her something about the grapes we were buying, I had to listen to this witch talk about “these people” who don’t "speak English good" and society’s demise due to the "illegal, uneducated managers" who don’t care.
Betty didn’t know I have a Godson who is Mexican-American, nor did Betty know my work with Showtime Championship Boxing has introduced me to numerous Mexican fighters- some of the hardest working people I’ve ever met. My body temperature was rising, but of course I didn’t tell Betty, because I DIDN’T WANT TO TALK TO HER! Instead, she got a couple of "uh-huhs," a few "well..what can you dos," and a smattering of "yups."
I bring this up as a public service. If you are Betty Bringdown, please keep it to yourself, or save it for your poor, long-suffering significant other. Because many of us don’t feel your pain, and we don’t want to.
