The Debut of EliteXC "Saturday Night Fights"
Kimbo Slice fought the longest fight of his professional MMA career when he beat James "The Colossus" Thompson on the history-making debut of Saturday Night Fights on CBS. If you weren't there to witness it live on May 31st, be sure to catch the replay on Showtime this Friday night at 11pm EST. It was a very exciting night that saw both first round KOs and hard fought slugfests. From where I sat cageside, it was one hell of an evening!
The show got off to a swift start when Brett "The Grim" Rogers took down John Murphy with a huge right hook to the chin, just 1:01 minutes into round one. After his stunning ringwalk, "The New York Bad Ass" Phil Baroni was stunned himself when "Smokin" Joe Villasenor made quick work of him, shutting him down in just 71 seconds with a series of punches after a choke hold. Gina Carano and Kaitlin Young put on one heck of a fight- one that should convince the doubters that women really can fight. Gina was victorious when the fight was called after the second round, but Kaitlin definitely showed everyone that she's one to watch. "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler and Scott "Hands Of Steel" Smith were on their way to a legendary title fight in a bout that saw both men attacking beautifully. The heartbreak showed on both their faces when the battle was stopped in the third round due to an accidental finger in Smith's eye. All I have to say is that I absolutely MUST be cageside for the rematch, too! I was having too good a time watching them duke it out, and I just can't wait to see them go at it again.
As the headliner, all eyes were on Kimbo; the man who says he turns from mild-manned family man to ferocious fighter as soon as he sets his eyes on his opponent. And he let the world know that he does indeed have a bit of a ground game, thanks to trainer Bas Rutten. Kimbo is the first to tell you that he has a lot to learn, but in his win over James Thompson he proved he's more than just a one-punch phenomenon.
There are more Saturday Night Fights on the horizon- and you don't have to spend $50 to see them. With the economy in a recession, we're here to help. Until then, tune into Elite XC on Showtime this Saturday night, when KJ Noons battles Yves Edwards in Hawaii. The undercard also features Nick Diaz, so you know it will be hot in more ways than one!
